VESTAL, N.Y. — A bill before Congress could help researchers at universities, like Binghamton University, transition the gap between lab research and marketplace success.
U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna, R-Barneveld, announced co-sponsorship of the TRANSFER Act of 2013 on Thursday at BU’s InnovativeTechnology Complex on Murray Hill Road in Vestal.
Essentially, the new bill would allow researchers using grant moneyto use a discretionary amount to help transfer the research to the marketplace. Right now, research and work is defined in the grant proposal and researchers are not permitted to use the funds to do work outside the scope of the grant. Most research focuses on the concept and the development of an idea, but not the commercialization of a product stemming from the research idea.
