Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Congressman Richard Hanna was joined by former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge at the Binghamton Armory to discuss the importance of the New York National Guard and the potential of an expanding role for it.
“Homeland Security is exactly what it sounds like, protecting our homeland from harm,” said Ridge, “and that’s exactly what our local first responders do as well.”
Ridge said the men and women of the National Guard are uniquely positioned as a domestic fighting unit to tackle the issue.
Most recently, Hanna worked to include language in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2014, which was signed into law last December. It will include a mandatory evaluation of cyber operations by the department of defense as well as an evaluation of the National Guard’s ability to take part in those operations.
